The Battle of the Badges

The Vaughan Firefighters took on the Toronto Police Services hockey team in a Battle of the Badges at the Sports Village on April 29th.

Guest referee, Eddie Shack entertained the crowd with his classic humour. Ex-NHLer Gary Leeman and Dale Hawchuk boosted the rooster of each team to add to the game. Although the great weather keep some people away, the game still raised thousands of dollars for the Vaughan Professional Firefighter Benevolent Fund. The Benevolent Fund is a separate committee of the Local Firefighter union that raises money for local charities. Fund president, Firefighter Dave Smith presented Peter Wixon from the Vaughan Food Bank a cheque for $1,000. The team donated $500 and the Benevolent Fund donated the other $500. Vaughan’s owe, Angelica Dicastro entertained the crowd with a beautiful performance of the national anthem.

The game was exciting and fast paced. The lead changed hands many times before the Police tied the game with a little more than 2 minutes left. The firefighters hit the cross bar with 26 seconds left on the clock. The game went to a 3 player shoot-out that ended up tied 2-2 so Eddie called the game a draw. The fans got all the moneys worth.

After the game, Eddie, Dale and Gary stayed around and signed autographs for the fans then joined the players for refreshment at Turtle Jack’s.
